How Many New York Yankees Championships

New York

New York is a vibrant destination with so much to do. Flights are usually direct from London to JFK or Newark and are no more than 8 hours. It's hottest in July but sunniest in June.

New York isn't short of visitors attractions. The Empire State Building is known as The Cathedral of the Skies and is the well-known skyscraper towering on the cities skyline. It has appeared on the silver screen in such blockbusters as King Kong and Sleepless in Seattle. No visit to metropolis would be complete without a trip to the top to check out the fantastic views. Opened in 1931, it stands 1,453 feet high and draws 3.6 million people to its observatories every year!

The Statue of Liberty is America's symbol for freedom - an icon for the immigrant. It stands 151 feet above New York Harbor. From 1886, ferries have been bringing people to her feet on Liberty Island. You can climb up the 354 step narrow spiral staircase inside the Statue, but get there early to steer clear of the queues or else you may face a 3-hour ascent!

Ellis Island at the mouth of the Hudson River is also inextricably connected with immigration. The island has largely been created from land fill. It re-opened in 1990, preserving the memories and history of more than 100 million Americans. Between 1892 and 1954, 12 million immigrants moved into the United States from the island, welcomed by the Statue of Liberty on neighbouring Liberty Island.

The Ellis Island Immigrant Museum displays to visitors what arriving in America was all about through the mediums of film, pictures, archives and recordings. A highlight is The Immigrant Wall of Honor - a round monument including 200,000 names commemorated by their ancestors.

Only rich immigrants were given automatic entrance into the United States. The others faced a physical examination. Immigrants who were authorized spent an average of three to five hours at Ellis Island. More than 3000 people perished on the island while being held in the hospital facilities. Those turned down admission to the States were turned down as a result of health, criminal record or insanity.

Central Park is a magnificent oasis offering sanctuary from city life. Many choose to stroll along the mall, ride in a carriage or row around the lake. Also popular is the kid's zoo. The recreation area is great any time of the year. In summer it is great for relaxing in the sun but in the fall the autumn leaves look stunning. Winter is also a good time to visit as frost and snow turn the park into a winter wonderland.

New York offers fabulous shopping opportunities like Bloomingdales's, Macy's and Saks 5th Avenue.

New York City is an excellent city to explore so why not visit soon.

If you can't afford New York this year, why not try a staycation. Check out some Dorset cottages and Cornwall cottages and try a holiday in the south of England.

The Yankee Years

The Yankee Years

Twelve straight playoff appearances. Six American League pennants. Four World Series titles. This is the definitive story of a dynasty: the Yankee yearsWhen Joe Torre took over as manager of the New York Yankees in 1996, the most storied franchise in sports had not won a World Series title in eighteen years. The famously tough and mercurial owner, George Steinbrenner, had fired seventeen managers ...
